The Christmas Table Tennis Tournament 2019

PBC Table Tennis Coaching Centre organized the much anticipated Christmas tournament at St. Aloysius Pavilion on Saturday 14th December.

With a record entry, players were placed into their age categories in the Singles events, for the very first time the Father & Son doubles was introduced. Ten FS entries played in this category, requiring son's age to be Under 15.
The event was full of exciting table tennis, tense moments and surprise results.

In the Under 11 category Matthew Zammit was impressive, he made it to the semi finals without losing a set in the qualification round. Matthew defeated his older brother Michael 3-0 to make way for his first table tennis final appearance.
In the other semi final hot favourite Gianluca Alessandro lived up to his seeding as he showed his quality to win in three tight sets against the ever improving Jacques Camilleri. Score 11-9, 11-7, 11-9.
In the final, Gianluca was a clear favourite as he built a reputation in earlier competitions taking top spot. On the other hand novice player Matthew showed very good play but the experience and determination of Gianluca was too much for him to overcome and lost narrowly 3-0. Score 11-7, 11-9, 12-10.

The Under 13 final was contested by Jeremy Galea and Michael Hall. This was a close enough affair with a good start by Jeremy taking an easy first set. Michael pulled back the deficit to take the second set 11-9. Jeremy went on to win the third but Michael hit back in the fourth set to level the match 2-2. In the fifth and final set Jeremy was the better player and eventually pulled away to claim a 3-2 win.

It was brother versus brother in the Under 15 final, the Ellis twins. Matthew came out strong in the first set and took the lead. Mark is a massive fighter and came back strong in the second set and won 12-10 to level the match 1-1. With tension and nerves high Mark continued where he left off, his play turned more consistent and took the next two set 11-3, 11-8. The bro battle was over, final score Mark 3 Matthew 1.

Ten teams of Father & Son played a knock out and was a delight to watch the family dynamics at play. Carl and Jacques Camilleri were dominant and reached the final without dropping a set. However, in the final, the Camilleris met stronger opposition Stefan and Gianluca Alessandro. The match was tightly contested and it was the composed Camilleris who came out top with the score in the deciding game 15-13.

In the semi finals of the Seniors category, Adrian Bartos and Kyle Zammit defeated Shaun Muscat and Nissim Ohayon respectively. In the final Adrian took a relatively easy win against Kyle the younger player. Kyle showed some good play but the experience of the Romanian opponent was too much to beat. Adrian Bartos wins 3-0.

Finally, congratulations to all the players and in particular the finalists. Thanks to photographer Matthew Borg Cardona for capturing the event. Thank you also to all volunteers who helped out on the day in making the event such a success.

Christmas Table Tennis Tournament 2016

The Christmas Table Tennis Tournament organized by PBC Table Tennis Coaching Centre was held on Saturday 17th December 2016.
Thanks to all who showed up at St. Aloysius pavilion for a successful event!

We had a good turnout of table tennis players, welcoming new faces and former players alike.

Once again the event was divided into four categories in order to give all the players the chance of success at their age level. All players of each category played on a round robin format and first four placing determined who advances to the semi finals.

In the Under 11 Christian Cauchi, Malta's ranked number 4, had a comfortable victory over his much younger opponents. Jeremy Galea placed second, a promising up and coming young player. Ben Barbara and Gianluca Alessandro took away bronze, two players who started playing table tennis this year are now beginning to show talent for the game.

In the Under 13 Runner-up Matthew Mifsud was in good form and he put in a solid performance, narrowly losing the final against the more experienced player Luca 11-9, 11-9, 11-8. Luca Flask secured first place without losing a single set throughout all his matches.

The Under 15 semi final, Carl Bondin used all his experience to close out a really good victory over Isaac Bartolo, who many thought stood the chance to progress to the final.
In the other semi final, Karl Cauchi showed battling qualities but was not enough and lost to a determined Kyle Zammit 3-0.
The two young guns Kyle and Carl faced off for the title. Kyle could not handle Carl's fast paced offensive style in the final match. Carl went on to take home gold with a deserved 3-0 win.

Earlier in the rounds, Gabriel Vella showed good form and played a firm display against Carl Bondin. Both players showed fantastic fight and determination in what was a real battle. Gabriel had big chances in the first two sets but lost 14-16 12-14.

An exciting future looms large for this young Gabriel!

In the first semi final of the Senior's category, it was all to play right from the start. Shaun Muscat got in on the act as he stepped up to defeat Daniel Musu 3-1.
In the other semi final, there was an upset brewing, as one of the favourites Andrew Borg Costanzi was knocked out by Daniel Attard.
In the final Daniel Attard was unstoppable when it came to the crunch match. Despite Shaun's best efforts, he could not quite get to grips with Daniel as he came through in straight sets 11-7, 11-7, 14-12.

Finally, it takes selfless contributions from people to make this event go.
I would like to recognize a few who donate their time and effort; Riccardo Flask and Shaun Muscat, plus the many players who helped with the setup and tear-down.

Of course, saving the best for last, I would like to thank all those who participated. Well done to all the players.
See you all back again in 2017!

Summer's End Table Tennis Tournament 2016

PBC Table Tennis Coaching Centre hosted the End Of Summer Table Tennis Tournament for the third consecutive year on Saturday 3rd September. The Tournament was a resounding success for the organization and the administration. The volunteers played a huge role in the success and the smooth course of the tournament.

Special thanks to players Shaun Muscat for helping in the draws of the tournament, Riccardo Flask for the great photo taking throughout the event. Thank you also to Daniel Bajada, Malta’s National Seniors Champion, for his priceless contribution during the summer coaching sessions and the tournament.

In the Under 13 Category qualifying round, there was a count-back between three players Luca Flask, Matthew Mifsud and Christian Cauchi as they all won the same number of matches. Luca and Christian qualified for the semis knock out phase having won the highest number of games. A fine performance was displayed by newcomer Matthew Mifsud who showed he has potential, he was unfortunate not to make it to the next round.

In the semis, Luca beat last year’s Under 11 champion Calvin Azzopardi and Christian beat Matthias Zahra 3-0 to reach the final.
Christian defeated Luca in the qualifying round and met again in the final.
Though this match was a different story, this time Luca was victorious, final result 8-11, 3-11, 15-13, 11-13.

In the Under 15, Samuel Okoh played well and moved easily into the final stage. He kept his rich veins of form throughout all his matches. Carl Bondin advanced from his opening group; he then beat Kyle Zammit in the semis.
Towering above all his opponents, Samuel made short work of the final beating Carl 11-6, 11-7, 11-6.

In the Seniors event, Marco Muscat caused the shock of the day when he defeated one of the favorites Shaun Muscat 3-1 in the quarterfinal. Daniel Attard and Samuel Okoh, last year’s finalists, met in the semifinal, though this time it was Sam’s revenge.
Marco Muscat entered the Seniors event with little expectations, despite his surprise win in the quarterfinal, lost to mighty Andrew Borg Costanzi in the semi.

In the final Sam set a cracking pace and Andrew was unable to break down his control and counter attacking game. Andrew had chances but Super Sam was yet again in a temperament of his own, simply in fine form!

Finally, it was great to see the fine support of the players received at the event from their families, friends and spectators alike.

‘For me, it was a delight to be working with a great number of players who are so enthusiastic.’

Congratulations to all the finalists!

Junior National Championships 2016

After the success of reaching the Under 11 plate event final and taking home silver on two occasions this season, nine year old Christian Cauchi entered the Junior Nationals full of confidence and optimism.

Christian ranked no 6 reached the Plate final once again. His anxiety was also evident but fought back well in every game and registered his first gold in the Under 11 Plate beating Andrew Bezzina 11-8, 11-9, 11-7 in the final.
Bravo Christian!

It was a double celebration for Christian. Teamed with eight year old Matthew Cassar, they reached the final in the Under 11 Boys Doubles finishing runners-up after losing to their much older and stronger opponents.
Well done boys!

Christmas 2015 Table Tennis Tournament

PBC Table Tennis Coaching Centre organized the much awaited Christmas Tournament on Saturday 19th December at St. Aloysius Pavilion.
Players were placed into groups depending on their age for single matches. The event was full of exciting table tennis, surprise results and played in a fabulous spirit. Due to the numerous games scheduled for the event, all matches were played on a best of three.

In the Seniors category, Robert Livori with his anti-top tactics managed to defeat Andrew Borg Costanzi in two straight sets.

The Under 15 final was contested between two Daniels. Daniel Musu can feel a little unlucky to find himself on the losing side as he played well throughout the competition. But it was Daniel Attard who took a close 2-1 victory.

Jake Pisani, a table tennis novice, showed some marked progress and was the surprise finalist in the Under 13 group. Table tennis is relatively a new passion for teenager Jake, he is indeed a promising player! However Carl Bondin was in top condition, enough to be crowned champion.

A big improvement was shown by a number of players and this augurs well for the upcoming year 2016.

A mega thank you to all that showed up and well done to the finalists!

1st Under 11 Ranking Tournament organized by the MTTA 2015-2016

Christian Cauchi put in a standout performance at the 1st Under 11 National Ranking Tournament organized by the Malta Table Tennis Association on Friday 25th September.

In his first ever participation in an Open Competition, 10 year old Christian appeared very calm throughout all his matches and made it to the Plate Final.

In the final held on Monday 28th September, Christian battled bravely against his opponent and after leading 2-1, went down to a close 3-2 result.

Congratulations to Christian and his parents and brother Karl whose support has helped his rapid progress in table tennis.

Well done Christian!

Summer's End Table Tennis Tournament 2015

Thanks to all the players, organizers, parents and supporters for coming out last Saturday for the Table Tennis Summer End Tournament. It was a great success!

Thank you for all those who helped with the setup and teardown. Special thanks to Matthew Borg Cardona and Riccardo Flask for their photographic input during the event.

Thank you also to Malta Champion Daniel Bajada for his contribution throughout the summer sessions and tournament.

In the Under 11 Final Calvin Azzopardi was more consistent throughout the sets playing cautious strokes and hitting hard at the right opportunity. Luca played the all-out attack but was not enough and succumbed to a 3-1 defeat.

Sam Okoh defeated league team mate Carl Bondin in the Under 13 Final. Carl showed marked improvement this summer but Sam was in his best ever style and Carl had to content with silver.

The Under 15 category was contested between Sam Okoh and Daniel Attard. Sam pulled off the shocker of the tourney, blasting through talented Daniel, the U15 favourite.

The Seniors event was again contested between Sam and Daniel, however this time it was Daniel’s vengeance. The Final was enjoyable to watch, Daniel was determined and showed his fine all round game, sweeping by now a deflated and tired Sam.

Overall, the more outstanding performances came from Samuel Okoh who qualified for the U13, U15 and Seniors Finals taking home two gold and one silver, a memorable achievement indeed!

Thank you again to everyone that showed up and congratulations to the finalists!

Summer's End Table Tennis Tournament 2014

Following this summer successful table tennis coaching program, PBC Table Tennis Coaching Centre organized a Summer’s End Table Tennis Tournament on Saturday 6th September at St. Aloysius pavilion.

With so many new faces this summer, the event was divided into four categories in order to give everyone the chance of success at their age level.

In the Under 11, two new players, Adam Doublet and Luca Flask pulled off a major surprise when they advanced to the semi finals.

Both semi finals were very closely fought out affairs, Adam Doublet beat Isaac Bartolo 3-1 and Calvin Azzopardi fended off the challenge from Luca Flask by winning his match 3-2. The final was a nail bitter and eventually came down to the fifth set with Calvin winning 11-9.

Daniel Attard made easy work of the Under 13 only being pushed by Samuel Okoh in the final. Daniel went on to beat Sam 4-2.

The Under 15 saw our more experienced youths battling it out with Andrew Borg Costanzi taking a well deserved gold beating Mark Muscat in the final 4-0.

In the Senior’s event Marco Muscat had a brilliant day and surpassed expectations reaching the final beating Hungarian Peter Luraszko in the semi.

Noel Debattista and Marco Muscat fought out a 4-3 sensational final with Noel taking home gold, final set score 11-7.

Eight year old Christian Cauchi was voted best improved player.

Congratulations to all players who took part and a special thanks to Daniel Bajada, three times Senior National Champion and ranked 126 in Italy, for his contribution at the summer sessions and tournament. Thanks Dan!

Daniel Attard triumphs at the 2013 Christmas Table Tennis Tournament

PBC Table Tennis Coaching Centre organized a one day Christmas Tournament for youths on Saturday 21st December at St. Aloysius pavilion.

The tournament saw the most talented and eager table tennis players of our school. The event was relentlessly and intensely competitive.

The qualifying round commenced early afternoon with 4 groups each containing four or five players. To qualify for the Open Singles the players had to win or place second in their respective Group. The rest participated in the Plate event.

In the Singles event, dominant Daniel Attard claimed the title defeating a strong-minded Luke Abela 3-1 in an all-out attacking and entertaining final match. Luke has a sporting ambition and determination to fight for every point but this was just not enough against a firm Daniel.

In the Plate event Tyron Delia was a clear favorite and beat Rudger Xerri 3-0 in the final. Tyron eliminated David Mamo in the semi final, while Rudger eliminated Kieron Cassar.

Calvin Azzopardi, Isaac Bartolo and Kyle Schembri were voted as the most promising youngsters of the tournament.
Bronze medals were awarded to third place Sean Goodlip, Gary Azzopardi, Rudger Xerri and David Mamo.

‘It is good to see the players treating this participation as another experience to polish their table tennis skills. We congratulate the winners and thank all participants for a great table tennis spectacle’.

Physiotherapist Guo Ming opened the program with a short lecture on ‘prevention of injury’. Ming, also a keen table tennis player, highlighted the main causes of injuries through table tennis and how to prevent them, both from his personal experience and from a physiotherapy point of view.

Head coach Peter Borg Cardona assisted by Serbian coach Zlejko Demitrijevic conducted the two hour morning training followed by lunch. The afternoon kicked off with yet another one hour of coaching, basic drills for footwork and technique as well as multi ball training.

As in previous editions, the climax of the day was the competition. In the Singles event, Julian Sultana confirmed once again to be superior and the strongest. The final was fast paced and dominated by Julian. He beat his opponent Gabriel Debattista in three straight sets to secure top place and take home gold.

The competition featured two promising prospects, both aged 11, Carl Bondin and Matthew Galea. Both Matthew and Carl produced several impressive displays in the quarter final against Simon Sultana and Theo Camilleri respectively.

In the Plate event Simon Sultana and Mark Ebejer fought out a 3-2 thriller in the semi final with Simon taking the final game 11-8. Simon then overpowered Theo Camilleri 3-0 in the final.
All participants showed improvement in their training and in the matches held at the end of the camp. This brings the end of another successful year at PBC table tennis coaching centre.

Table Tennis Training Camp 2010

A group of promising youngsters thoroughly enjoyed the one day table tennis training camp organized by pbctabletennis coaching centre held on Wednesday 29th December at St. Aloysius Pavilion.

The camp was limited to sixteen players to ensure that each participant will have ample time to receive instructions and individual attention from Coach Peter Borg Cardona teaching the players many useful techniques, game strategies, and practical skills.

Malta champion seventeen year old Daniel Bajada who is currently registered with Bari Tennistavolo ASD Fiaccola and plays in the Italian Serie B1 Lega Nazzionale, joined the camp and helped out in the coaching development of the youngsters. Daniel acted as a valuable training partner and his presence motivated all the players to try even harder throughout the day.

The camp ended with a competition which saw the Sultana brothers triumph.

In the Singles event, Julian Sultana was in high spirit and determined to hold on to his gold which he won in 2009. The semi finals saw Julian play James Zammit but Julian had too much and claimed the game 3-0. In the other semi final, James Camilleri kept his fighting spirit against the up and coming youngster Gabriel Buhagiar to win 3-0 with close scores 11-9, 11-9, 11-9.
In the final Julian was not planning on letting his opponent have a chance, he was consistent and firm, finishing the match 3-0 and took the title for the second consecutive year.

The final of the plate event was contested between Simon Sultana and Reuben Sciberras. Simon took the first game 11-9 but Reuben reversed the next set 7-11, Simon took the lead again winning the third convincingly 11-6. The fourth set was close but Simon clinched the set 11-9 and claim his first ever gold.
Bronze medals were awarded to Gabriel Buhagiar, James Zammit, Gary Azzopardi and Luke Falzon.

Overall the camp was a definite success, WELL DONE to all the players who took part.

Today marks the launch of our brand new table tennis website.

Over recent months we have worked hard and we are now proud to present our new redesigned website.

The slick new design offers a modern and more professional appearance, an improved, easier navigation plus new features. It will continue to bring you the latest news and achievements of our group players and other informative material.

A unique section has been added to the new website dedicated to local table tennis legends, a warranted tribute to Maltese players from yesteryear.

This is a good time for me to acknowledge with heartfelt thanks my volunteer webmaster, my son. Andrew contributed countless hours to this project. He was that catalyst that brought this website to a new level.

I would also like to thank my other son Matthew, for his photographic input during the site’s initial years till today.

Table Tennis Training Camp 2009

Following last year’s successful program, pbctabletennis coaching centre organized a second ‘one day’ table tennis training camp on the 22nd December 2009 at St. Aloysius pavilion.

The program opened with a ‘Mental preparation in sport’ workshop conducted by one of Malta’s top sport psychologist Adele Muscat. She gave a one hour inspirational speech to the young players.

The table tennis coaching session under the supervision of coach Peter Borg Cardona started at 10.30 until lunch time with a fifteen minute break. With a range of playing standards, emphasis was made on multi ball training to meet the individual needs of the players. The Newgy robot was also used, a perfect practice partner for learning fast.

The coaching session resumed at 13:30 and a competition took place at the end of the camp.

In the Youths Singles event, Julian Sultana in dynamic form came out the victor after beating 3-1 last year’s champion Mark Ebejer in the semi final and Stefan Agius in a brilliant five set final match.

The plate final was contested between James Camilleri and Reuben Sciberras. The final may have been a one sided affair with James winning in three straight sets. For Reuben, it was a magnificent achievement for one so young, taking home his first ever table tennis silver.

Gabriel Debattista, Mark Ebejer, Daniel Vella and Gabriel Buhagiar were awarded bronze medals.

1st Under 13 Open Tournament 2009-2010

James Zammit showed off his future potential after winning silver in the first of a series U13 open event organized by the Malta Table Tennis Association.

James, currently ranked no. 6 in the U13 category, controlled his attacking instinct and only hitting with speed and power with his forehand at the right opportune. He beat Yannick Yankham in the first round and later dispatched of higher ranked players no. 4 Daniel Said and no. 2 Luca Minuti.

The final match was contested in a very friendly atmosphere against the more mature Portelli, eventually being beaten but by no means outclassed.

57th Malta Junior National Championships

The Junior National Table Tennis Championships were held between Friday 3rd and Monday 6th July.

Congratulations to young Julian Sultana for pulling off a major surprise to win the U13 and U18 Plate events.

U13 Plate Final

Despite playing to some extent shaky and perhaps below his average, Julian's passion and determination helped him reach the final with simplicity. In the final, Julian faced Nico Mifsud, a talented young player. Julian claimed victory by keeping his edge in three straight sets. Julian's force was no match for his opponent as he finished off the game 11-4, 17-15, 11-3.

U18 Plate Final

In the Under 18 final, Mark Ebejer started as a clear favorite for the event merely because he is more experienced, physically tougher and older.

Mark relying on his one-of-a-kind powerful forehand whilst Julian psychologically stronger and a wannabe lad.

They know each other's game well and battled it out in the final with Julian deservedly emerging winner for the second time in the Championships.

Players Stefan Agius, James Camilleri, Gabriel Debattista and James Zammit performed well despite losing in the course of the games. They found it hard to get to the top however they put a brave performance and showed great sportsmanship throughout the competitions. Lastly, a good show was registered by Luke Catania in the U21 Plate event taking home a merited silver.

To all our participating players...Well done boys!

Under 13 Tournament organized by the MTTA

The second Under 13 Boys Competition organized by the MTTA this season kicked off on Friday 15th May 2009.

19 boys aged from 10 upward competed in a knock out event.

In the first group Andrea Portelli made easy work of his group. In the second group, James Camilleri raised a few eyebrows creating shocks on the way to reach the final. He registered a hard fought win over second seed Adam Zaouri in three straight sets to move on to meet Julian Sultana in the semi final.

The contest between James Camilleri and Julian Sultana was a close match. These two players from the same coaching school [pbctabletennis coaching centre] know each other’s game inside out and this continued to push them to greater heights.

A nail-bitter performance going to the fifth and final set.

James maintained his composure throughout, and went on to beat his ‘best mate’ with the final score 11-8.

In the final James found his opponent hard to handle and bowed out gracefully.

It is certainly a huge boost for Julian and James to advance in the U13 class. It is a big step forward for the two young lads.

Table Tennis Training Camp - December 2008

A good number of young table tennis players attended the first ‘one day training camp’ organized by pbc tabletennis coaching centre in collaboration with St. Aloysius coaching centre. The training camp was held at St. Aloysius gym facilities on Monday 22nd December. The program started with a two hour coaching morning session followed by lunch and a full one hour table tennis DVD show. The afternoon session kicked off with another one hour table tennis coaching session. To enhance the program, the Newgy robot was utilized enabling the players to improve their strokes and footwork. This proved very successful.

The highlight of the day was unquestionably the competition.

In the Youths Singles event, Mark Ebejer confirmed to be the strongest. The final was an all out attacking spectacle between James Camilleri and Mark Ebejer. On this day, Mark was determined to succeed and he exceeded all expectations, winning the final in style 3-0.

The Youths Plate event final was hotly contested between Edward Borg Costanzi and Luka Spiteri. In this match Edward raised the level of his game and his unrelenting forehand attacks proved to be too much for the eleven year old Luka. Edward cruised his way to a 3 sets to 1 victory claiming his first title in table tennis.

Bronze medals were awarded to third place Julian Sultana, James Zammit, Ryan Galea and Reuben Sciberras.

The competition was indeed a great success and finished as scheduled thanks to all present.

James Camilleri wins the Under 15 Plate event 03.11.08

In his first ever participation in an Open Competition organized by the MTTA, James convincingly won the Under 15 Plate event. James was confident with his topspin play and his sound services were particularly effective every time he served. There was little his opponent in the final could do and there was no final game drama; despite Luke’s fighting spirit the contest was over in straight sets. James played in style and it was great performance and achievement for the young master.

Final result James Camilleri beat Luke Minuti 3-0

The Times of Malta, Tuesday, 22nd January 2008:

Children with disabilities get new sports academy

A sports academy for children with physical disabilities has been set up by Razzett tal-Hbiberija of Marsascala.

The first training session, in table tennis, took place at the gymnasium of St Aloysius College in Birkirkara under the specialised coaching of Peter Borg Cardona.

The academy, established in cooperation with local sports associations, will offer its members the opportunity to practise three different sports per year. They have the choice of para-equestrian, sailing, tennis, table-tennis, basketball and swimming.

The participants will be professionally trained for 12 consecutive weeks by experienced coaches in each discipline.

The academy's coordinator is Martin Schillig, who said that some of the major barriers to participation in sport for children with disability are a lack of funding, unavailable or unsuitable facilities and difficulties with transport.

But to make up for this, he added, the children's motivation is high and their enthusiasm is encouraging. This was what spurred Razzett to offer the training free of charge in central locations and at wheelchair accessible venues.

The academy is supported by the Malta Table-Tennis Association, the Malta Basketball Association, the Malta Tennis Federation, the Malta Equestrian Federation and the Malta Sailing Federation.

For more information one may contact Razzett tal-Hbiberija on 2163 6526 ext. 20 or e-mail sports.academy@razzett.org.
